ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
If dental caries is not limited to the hard tissues of the tooth but it spreads to the pulp, endodontic therapy (root canal treatment) is required. The treatment involves from 2 to 5 visits during which the pulp chamber and root canals of the tooth are cleaned out, disinfected and filled with special material.
How a typical root canal treatment is performed?
Depending on diagnosis, your dentist chooses the most suitable treatment procedure. However, to give a general idea of root canal treatment, it can be described in a simplified way as consisting of the following steps:
1.An opening to the pulp chamber is made and the dead or living pulp tissue is removed (the living one removed under local anaesthesia).
2. The root canal/s is/are prepared using root canal preparation instruments while rinsing with plenty of disinfecting, surface active and chelating agents.
During root canal preparation, the pulp tissue from the root canal and the bacterial toxins from dentinal tubules are removed, making the widened canal suitable for filling.
3. The canals are dried.
4. The canals are filled with an inert material - This is to seal the canal at its whole length from the physiological opening in order to prevent bacteria entering from the pulp cavity to the upper tissues.
The most common material for a permanent root canal filling is Gutta-percha. It has been used for over 100 years and despite many new materials it is still the best canal filler, giving excellent medical effects.
5. Dental restoration. Front teeth require no complicated restoration after root canal treatment unless they are very damaged. A composite filling is enough in most cases. Of course, making a facing or a crown may be considered, but it is not absolutely necessary. The situation is different when it comes to back teeth, molars especially. The risk of breaking a root-canal-treated tooth is as high as 52% in this case. These teeth must be provided with prosthetic crowns to reduce the risk of breaking to 2%.
